Coachella 2014 Dessert Guide

Coachella Weekend 2 is upon us. For those of you planning your weekend eating and drinking, I have a guide to some of the best Coachella dessert options!

Located in the Terrace dining area near the Do Lab and those awesome fish tacos are an array of artisan purveyors. I particularly enjoyed the refreshing selection of handmade popsicles from Sweet Clementines. Lemon Buttermilk was tart and light and their Strawberry Rose was just blissful ($5).

If you haven’t discovered already on this blog, Le Bon Garcon are my favorite French style caramels. It was such a pleasant surprise to find them in the Terrace Dining area. You can grab a pocket ful of these carames ($5) and enjoy a sweet little bit throughout the day. The sea salt caramels are soft, smooth and satisfying.

Portand darling Salt & Straw is at Coachella this year offering their delectable ice cream and they are stationed right next to Stumptown – double win! Their Arbequina olive oil is one of my favorite flavors so I was stocked to find it on the menu. Paired with Coffee bourbon and you are set. Single scoops are $7 so opt for the double $10, you deserve it.

An LA fave dessert shop has found it’s way to the desert – Creme Caramel LA. You can take a little mid day breather and treat yourself to the mid day sweets break and enjoy the BEST creme caramel EVER! Other menu options include, upside down pies, frozen vanilla custard bombs and some jazzed up rice crispy snacks. Go!

For those who like their sweet a little savory, you can enjoy an awesome arepa treat from multiple stands throughout the field. Sweet griddle corn, ooey gooey mozarella with a health drizzle of honey. It’s the honey that makes it.

And of course the best for last… Coolhaus. A Coachella VIP favorite, regulars come back for ice cream sammie goodness year after year and for good reason – it’s good! I opted for a Strawberry Mojito scoop last weekend, but this weekend I’m going for the gold and getting a Potato chip butterscotch cookie + Fried Chicken Caramel ice cream sammie. Bring it.

Enough sweets to fill your entire week. Happy dessert-ing.

Sweet Gifts That Deliver | A Holiday Gift Guide

It’s that gift giving time of year again, have you completed all of your holiday shopping yet? If you need a few fun ideas that don’t even require you to step into a mall or battle for parking, then I’ve got you covered.

Here is my gift guide for the sweet lover in your life (and they all deliver!):

Compartes Chocolates

Gourmet chocolatier Jonathan Grahm crafts beautiful confections from truffles to chocolate bars. My favorite of his chocolate delights are the ‘love nut’ – hand roasted nuts (you choose your favorite nut) caramelized with Tahitian vanilla, sprinkled with a pinch of sea salt, coated in a blend of chocolates and topped with raw cacao powder. They are a mouthful of goodness and make for one sweet present!

Donut Snob

There is bound to be a donut lover in your life (maybe it is yourself) so why not gift them a dozen donuts. LA based Donut Snob delivers specialty donuts, flavors like the Oinker (maple bacon) and Raspberry Lemon Lulu (stuffed with raspberry coulis and lemon zest).  These donuts are pillowy soft and incredible. Who wouldn’t love a box of gourmet donuts delivered to their door?

Le Bon Garcon

Le Bon Garcon is hands down my favorite caramels ever. Justin Chao, the mastermind behind Le Bon Garcon, delicately crafts the butteriest luscious caramels.  These caramels are so good it is hard to choose a favorite. I love the nutty crunch of the macadamia caramels, but I also love the tropical burst from the mango-passion fruit or sometimes I’m in the mood for the simple and classic salted caramel. But the newest holiday flavor – Bon Hiver (persimmon, guava and lime) tastes like a holiday pie. It is slightly spiced, fragrant and just wonderful. Give the gift of caramels this holiday season!

Crème Caramel LA

Crème Caramel LA offers velvety rich crème caramels in assorted flavors along with the most swoon-worthy bread pudding in town. Best part is that you can find that at local farmers markets AND they deliver. A box of crème caramels and bread pudding, I think that would make just about anyone burst with joy.

Coolhaus

How about receiving ice cream monthly. Sounds good right! I think it does. Coolhaus now offers a pint or sammie of the month club. You can pick up in the store or have a new surpise pint or custome four pack of ice cream sammies delivered to your door monthly. It’s like a wine club, but way cooler and sweeter. Anyone want to buy me a membership ;)? Coolhaus also now overs Haus-made products like chocolate nutella spread, marshmallows and bacon salt. Yum!

Poketo

Want something not food related for your sweetie? Then these Poketo tea towels are for you. Featuring hand-printed design in candy pink and cocoa brown, it is adorned with cute images of cakes, pies and ice cream. They are perfect for displaying with your freshly baked muffins or to just hang up in the kitchen. Non-edible sweetness!

Happy shopping. I hope you are able to find the perfect sweetness for your loved ones!

Creme Caramel LA – A Love Story

Creme Caramel LA is the best and the worst thing that has ever happened to me. I first caught wind of Creme Caramel LA from the most recent Eat My Blog charity bakesale. My friend Cathy of Gastronomy Blog posted the most mouth-watering picture of their bacon bread pudding and it was all over. I started desperately tweeting trying to figure out where I could find this dessert that looked too good for words. Then, Kristine de la Cruz (the owner of Creme Caramel LA) tweeted back to me! She told me that they would  soon be serving up their decadently sweet treats at the Melrose Place Farmers Market on Sundays.

I patiently waited for Creme Caramel LA’s debut at the famers market. When the day finally came, I went to the farmers market, me Miss Kristine in person and made my first purchase – one original creme caramel. That was my first mistake, well that and having ever bought this incredible dessert to begin with. After the first creamy, rich bite I was hooked, no sold, no I was a fan for life! And then I was super sad, me and R had devoured this little treasure and there was no more. I would have to wait another week to get more. Why did I only buy 1???

I cannot wax poetic enough about Creme Caramel LA. From their sinfully delicious bacon bread pudding to their creme caramels, everything they are baking up is sheer blissful heavenly delights. The creme caramels  are precisely calibrated with the right amount of caramel flavor delicately woven throughout a velvety thick vanilla custard. It is supremely creamy and incandesent.

If after all that you still don’t believe me, go pick one up for yourself and I guarantee you will fall in love the way I did (well that is unless you don’t like flan-like desserts then you won’t like this at all and you’re crazy). I have to make a confession now,  I have approximately 3 original creme caramels a week. If I can’t make it to the market I order delivery from Creme Caramel LA, yeah they deliver! Now you see clearly why this is the best and worst thing to ever happen to me and my waistline.

And did I mention that Kristine and her staff are the nicest people you will ever meet, truly. She mans her booth every weekend with a big smile and a hug if you’re lucky! This is sweetness all around.  Do yourself a favor and find Creme Caramel LA!
